The Native Forest Restoration Trust (NFRT) is dedicated to protecting and restoring New Zealand’s native forest. It manages over 7,000 hectares of reserves covenanted for permanent protection through the QE II National Trust

PFNZ works with several projects managed by the Trust including:

McGregor and Puhoi Reserves. The Trust McGregor Reserves neighbour the ancient Waipoua forest, which shelters the famous kauri tree Tāne mahuta. The Trust works to support the natural regeneration as well as planting ex farmland for rapid recovery. The Northland Reserves provide critical habitat for endangered species including the North Island Brown Kiwi.

Rangitoto Station, King Country. This station was formerly cleared of bush for farming and is now protected to support remnants of mature native forest and large areas of regenerating bush. Rangitoto is contributing to the protection of native fauna, including the endangered Kokako bird. It also provides a base for education and community activities.

Pigeon Bush, South Wairarapa. This is the largest reserve owned by the Trust and was purchased to protect the forest from development. The forest comprises former farmland regenerating into young forest as well as protecting old growth forest. Birds often observed include the native falcon, morepork, and kererū.
